Concert description:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581
Written in 1789 for the clarinet virtuoso Anton Stadler, Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet is one of the most beloved works in the chamber music repertoire. Blending the clarinet seamlessly with the string quartet, the piece unfolds with elegance, warmth, and lyrical beauty, showcasing Mozart’s gift for intimate musical conversation.
York Bowen
Horn Quintet in C minor, Op. 85
Composed in 1927, Bowen’s Horn Quintet is a rich and expressive work that highlights the horn’s noble character and lyrical voice. With lush Romantic harmonies, sweeping melodies, and vibrant interplay between horn and strings, it stands as one of the finest chambers works written for the instrument.
Together, Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet and Bowen’s Horn Quintet offer two contrasting visions of chamber music: Mozart’s luminous Classical elegance and Bowen’s sumptuous Romantic richness, each revealing the expressive possibilities of a single wind instrument in dialogue with strings.
