The Seven Last Words of Christ was composed by Joseph Haydn as an orchestral work for the 1787 Good Friday service in Cádiz, Spain. It was commissioned by the Brotherhood of Santa Cueva in Cádiz, where it was customary to produce an oratorio every year during the lenten season. The seven main meditative sections of the orchestral work are based on seven expressions attributed to Jesus during his crucifixion. Labelled as sonatas, they are all slow movements framed by a slow introduction and a fast “Earthquake” conclusion, for a total of nine movements. Haydn’s publisher asked him to produce a shorted version for string quartet, Haydn’s Opus 51, which will be performed by R2 and Friends.
